Blue Fountain Bamboo (Fargesia nitida)
Fargesias are exceptionally cold-hardy bamboos that originiated in the high mountain habitat of China. In the US, it’s easily grown in zone 5. Blue Fountain Bamboo is a thin bamboo with vertical canes and attractive slender leaves that arch over gently, creating a fountain shape. In the juvenile stage, the dark purple canes are covered with a bluish-white powder. Nitida is a non-invasive clumping bamboo so it makes an excellent hedge or screen. It’s best grown in rich, well-drained soil in partial shade. It needs protection from hot afternoon sun so plant in a northern or eastern exposure. Blue Fountain Bamboo makes an excellent garden or container plant and it grows quickly creating a sensational display plant.
