Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa)
A magnetic to pollinators, including butterflies,this great perennial brings bright orange flowers that appear a top of its upright stems that reach a height of about 1- 2 feet. Perfect for the garden border, it blooms in mid to late summer and has a flowering period that extends for many weeks and once established it's an enduring subject. A US native it's also know a Pleurisy Root where it has been used in herbal medicine to treat respiratory conditions going back to the Native American culture. It comes up late in the spring, after most plants have emerged and forms a clump rather thatn a spreading rhizome like so many milkweed. It's good to mark the spot when is has disappeared in late fall so as to not disturb is dormant crown.
Hardy to Zone 4 and higher for outdoors.
