Jaboticaba (Myrciaria cauliflora)
Native to Brazil, this rare and unusual fruiting plant also makes a graceful bonsai. It is a slow-growing small tree and both the flowers and fruit emerge directly from the trunk and branches. The 1”, dark-purple-to-almost-black fruit has a grape-like appearance and it tastes something like black currant but with a white pulpy interior. The flower-to-fruit cycle is only 30 days so there can be multiple crops a year once the tree starts to bear. “Jaboticaba” is usually eaten fresh or made into jelly, juice or wine.
Hardiness zone 10 and higher for outdoors.
Full sun, grows to 2-10' in container, minimum indoor temperature 50°, intermittent bloomer
