Temple Bamboo (Semiarundinaria fastuosa)
Temple Bamboo is the largest hardy bamboo growing up to 20’ tall in zone 5. It’s an upright bamboo that withstands wind well and it makes an ideal hedge without any need of pruning. The canes emerge green but turn deep purple with the onset of cool temperatures. Each cane measures about 1.5” in diameter. Canes can be used to create trellises or other structures. Temple Bamboo is a “running bamboo” meaning it will spread in the garden, but it can be controlled by root pruning.
