Aloe (Aloe vera)
Known as the medicinal aloe, Aloe vera has been used for years as a natural remedy for burns and it was a common plant grown in every home. This stem-less succulent has thick, fleshy leaves filled with a translucent gel. Small white flecks adorn the green leaves and the serrated leaf margins have small white teeth. Yellow flowers appear on spikes in summer. Aloe vera sends out many young plants, or "pups," around the mother plant. Grow in well-drained soil in a partially sunny location. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings.
