Saturday, October 8th

10:00am- Behind the Scenes Tour with retail grower, Roger Ferland
Free
You don’t need reservations. Simply show up for the morning tour and learn the history of Logee’s. View the Ponderosa Lemon Tree, which has been growing in the same spot since 1900. Walk through our Big House where you’ll see camellias, Angel’s Trumpet plants, Calamondin oranges, a kumquat tree, and epiphyllums. Visit our Fern House and Potting Shed and see our giant staghorn ferns and our everblooming hibiscus ‘The Path,’ as well as other interesting vining plants. Get a tour of our new state-of-the-art Propagation Facility and our mother plant Begonia House, closed to the public except for our “Customer Appreciation Days.”

11:00am- Make a Succulent Dish Garden with retail grower, Danny Briere*

$30 for class and materials
Create your own Succulent Dish Garden under the guidance and instruction of our Retail Grower, Danny. You will recieve your $30 voucher the morning of the class to use in our retail store to purchase your plants. Feel free to bring you own container such as an open dish or bowl.  We will have some dish containers for purchase as well. Learn how to assemble, care for and create a beautiful succulent dish garden that will give you pleasure for years to come. These make great gifts for the holiday season.


1:00pm- Growing Meyer Lemon and other Citrus plants with Byron Martin

Meyer lemons are some of the most sought after citrus for their unique flavor and their ease of growth. They make excellent houseplants, with their fragrant blossoms and ability to grow in the same container for years. With a little instruction and attention to culture, you too can grow a table top lemon tree or other citrus such as grapefruits, tangerines, or kumquats inside.

 

3:00pm- Demonstration- Cutting and covering the Hardy Banana with Byron Martin

Our Hardy Banana stand (Musa basjoo) has been growing in the same spot for the past 10 years and every year we cut it back to about a foot high. This dramatic demonstration is also instructional as you watch the giant leaves, which are now over 15 feet tall, fall to the ground. Byron will go over materials needed and how to ensure that your hardy banana can withstand a New England winter. Remember to wear your gardening clothes because you may be asked to participate.  

 

All Day-Letterboxing Activity- with $5 Logee’s coupon upon completion
Free
Go on a scavenger hunt throughout our 6 retail greenhouses to search for hidden clues. Learn interesting facts about Logee's and its many unusual and tropical plants. Fill your letterboxing journey book with stamps and receive a $5 coupon. This is a great family activity for young and old. Bring your own stamp to stamp our Letterboxing Guest Book and post a comment. Activity open year-round.

Learn how to assemble and care for your own creative Fairy Garden. The morning of the class, you’ll receive a $30 voucher. You can select whichever pot, plants and fairy garden accessories you prefer with this voucher. We encourage you to bring any of your own miniature mementos such as crystals, rocks or props to add your personal flair to your fairy garden. This is a great class for young and old alike. Children under 10 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Space is limited. Make your reservations early.


1:00pm- Orchids: Culture and Care with Byron Martin

Orchid care is one of our most requested topics. Learn the basic care of orchids: potting, re-potting, re-blooming, cultural needs and seasonal care. Many types of orchids will be discussed including Phalaenopsis, Cattleya, Oncidiums, Phaius, Miltonias, Dendrobiums and terrestrial Jewel orchids. 


3:00pm- Demonstration- How to Winter Over Elephant Ear ‘Thai Giant’ with Byron Martin

Elephant Ear (Colocasia) ‘Thai Giant’ is one of our most popular Elephant Ears because of its massive sized leaves. Watch the dramatic pruning of ‘Thai Giant’ and learn how to dig the bulb and save the plant for next year’s growing season. These are easily overwintered in a pot with a growing leaf or overwintered in a pot and left to go dormant. He will go over materials needed. Remember to wear your gardening clothes because you may be asked to participate.
