Drumstick Tree (Moringa oleifera)
This native of northern India is known as “the tree that feeds the world” because the leaves, seedpods, mature seeds and even roots are edible. High in essential nutrients, it is used in cuisines throughout tropical Asia and Africa. Easy-to-grow in a container, it produces a bountiful amount of foliage the first year. White flowers appear during the summer months once the plant reaches 4-6’ in height. Then, long bean-shaped seedpods form. All the first year seedpods are edible; older seeds are pressed to make oil. Moringa is widely used in traditional medicine to boost energy and improve immune function. For best results, grow Moringa above 60°F and let the soil dry out between waterings.
