our Dahlia, Canna and Caladium department
Our
Dahlias, Cannas and Caladiums are top quality, #1 size bulbs that will
produce spectacular tropical foliage and flowers in your garden or
container.
Dahlias
- Dahlias can be started indoors in individual pots or trays about 4 weeks
before you plant outside. Cover the bulb with a couple inches of seed
starting potting mix and water well. Place in a sunny location.
Roots and shoots will form. Care MUST be taken in transplanting them
outdoors. Plant dahlias outdoors after all danger of frost has passed.
Choose a sunny site with well-drained soil. Dig soil to a depth of 12".
Amend soil with peat moss or compost. Replace about half the soil, then
place tubers flat and cover with remaining soil. Be careful not to break the
leaf shoot if you have started your plants indoors. Space tubers
12-36" apart depending on variety. Water well after planting. As plants
grow, increase watering. Fertilize at least once a month. Large Dinner
Plate Dahlias may require staking since they grow 3-4’ tall. Flowering
starts in mid-summer and continues until frost. Dinner Plate Dahlia
blooms often measure 8-12” across making them one of the largest and most
magnificent flowers in the garden. Hardy in zones 8-10. Dig and store
the bulbs in a cool, dry location for winter.
Canna
- Start indoors about 4 weeks before outdoor planting. Lay the root
horizontally in the potting soil about 1" below the surface. Roots and
top sprouts will form. Plant outdoors after all danger of frost has passed
and the soil has warmed. Space the rhizomes 4-5” deep and 15–18"
apart in moist, rich garden soil. Cannas love full sun and hot weather. Keep
moist and fertilize at least once a month. Cannas can also be grown in
containers. They are prized for their lush tropical foliage and tall flower
spikes that bloom throughout the summer months. North of zone 7, dig and
store the roots indoors over the winter. Hardy in zones 7-11.
Caladium
- For maximum performance, start bulbs indoors about 6 weeks before the last
frost date. Start in flats or individual pots. Plant about 1" deep in
damp peat moss or seed starting soil. Space 3". Water well and keep in
a very warm area. Transplant outdoors when all danger of frost has passed
and the soil has warmed to 65°. Outdoors, plant 1-3" deep and about
10" apart. Most Caladiums prefer to be grown in full to partial shade.
However, Caladium ‘Florida Cardinal’ tolerates full sun. Water
frequently and fertilize once a month. Caladiums are highly recommended for
container gardening, or to create a colorful garden border. They grow
12-18" tall. Caladiums are winter hardy only in zones 10 and 11. In
other areas, they must be dug and stored indoors for the winter.
