Cultural Information – Spondias
browse
our spondias department
Light:
Full sun (a south exposure).
Temperature:
As a potted plant, maintain indoor temperatures
above 50°.
Humidity:
Preferably 50% or
higher; however, they will tolerate low
levels for short periods with no harm.
Watering:
Bring soil to a state of dryness between
watering. Do not keep them
evenly moist. When
watering, thoroughly saturate soil until a little water runs out of
the bottom of the pot.
Fertilizer:
They are moderate feeders so 1/2 tsp./gallon
twice a month is a general recommendation.
When growth actively stops in winter, discontinue feeding.
Use a balanced fertilizer, i.e. 15-15-15 or a blooming
fertilizer like Pro Gro ‘Grow’ 7-9-5 or Electra 5-10-3.
Pruning:
Plants can be
pruned at any time; however, it’s best to prune in late winter
before growth starts so as not to disrupt flowering.
Insects and
Disease:
Spondias have few
problems with insects. They can have problems with root disease when
grown too wet and cold in the winter when dormant.
Comments:
Spondias are easy to grow and fruit when grown in
full sunlight. They can
almost fruit themselves to death and start fruiting as young plants.
It is best to discourage heavy fruiting until they have reached
some size. Be careful not
to keep too wet in the winter when they can be deciduous.
