Pink Ball Tree (Dombeya wallichii)

Just in time to chase away the winter blues, this spectacular flowering shrub from Madagascar blooms during the winter season with large pendulous umbels of pink flowers that carry a unique buttery fragrance. As a landscape plant in frost-free areas, it can become a specimen tree that’s a magnet for pollinators as the nectar literally drips out of the flowers. As a container plant in the north, it can be maintained by hard pruning every year. Pruning must happen no later than June so the plant has time to sense the decreasing daylight of fall. Also called Tropical Hydrangea, the Pink Ball Tree needs lots of direct sunlight and warm temperatures to reward the gardener with its magnificent floral show.
