For a dazzle of color,
this Central American shrub
has been used extensively
in tropical landscaping. Its
tolerance for dryness makes
it a great container plant for
an outdoor summer patio or
as a houseplant on a sunny
windowsill. The foliage is
a deep burgundy red when
grown in full sun and changes
to lighter shades under lower
light conditions. It’s easy to
grow under a variety of temperatures
and light as well as
tolerant of some neglectful watering. It also takes a hard pruning with ease
so even small spaces can enjoy its colorful foliage. On older plants, small
white flowers will appear at the growing tips during the summer months.
