Ive not seen this plant before and liked that it is a climber, which is different from the others in my plant collection.
Thank you so much, Lynda! We're thrilled you discovered the Climbing Onion—it's such a unique and charming plant that really does add something special to a collection. I want to review this plant after owning it for years. I bought a tiny Bowiea Volubilis at least 15 years ago at the Logee's greenhouse in Danielson. They had no babies of this potted up for sale at the moment but one of the staff made one up for me... it looked like a small green grape with a tiny green frill poking out of the top LOL.
I put it in the sunniest spot in the house which is not all that sunny and watched it take off.
Eventually I made a tripod trellis of narrow bamboo to wind the frilly vine up and around. Each year in late December the vining growth turns yellow and dies back. It can be cut off and discarded at this point, Two weeks later it starts growing again. Right now the exposed jade colored 'onion' is the size of a medium grapefruit. There are 4 vines at the moment. Here they make it to about 3 feet long each year before dormancy starts again.
I am a bit fussy about the papery outer skin and I remove it regularly to highlight the translucent green bulb. I will also remove the outer layer of the 'onion' when it starts splitting. It doesn't seem to mind this. and new bulblets will form if these fleshy layers are left at the base of the mother.
Perhaps it would be larger if I left it to fend for itself.
I love its otherwordly look and highly recommend this plant.
Baldur, what a wonderful testament to the staying power of our Climbing Onion (Bowiea volubilis)—we're thrilled that tiny 'green grape' has thrived for 15 years and grown into such a spectacular specimen with that mesmerizing jade-colored bulb! Your dedication to tending its otherworldly beauty, from crafting the bamboo trellis to carefully maintaining that translucent skin, truly captures the joy of long-term plant companionship. Thank you for being a loyal Logee's, and for sharing such an inspiring story that shows how our rare plants can become cherished living sculptures in a home. The Logee's Team
I've ordered before. Well packed and healthy. All 4 in a basket.

Wow! I received two little small bulbs in the 2 inch pot. First time ordering from Logees.
Package was secured with no damage.
I must say though always inspect soil when receiving new plants. I found a little bug on this plant.
A friend of my boyfriend and me introduced us to Logees Greenhouse when we were attending Nichols college in 2008. We used to love taking a drive there and walking around the greenhouses and viewing their unique plants like the giant Alocasia, lemon trees, and brugmansia. On one of our trips, we each picked something out and potted it up on the bench by the register. I picked a stacked crassula, and my bf picked a climbing onion. Both are still alive and well, twelve years later! They've been moved from dorms to multiple apartments, left neglected and cold- sometimes unwatered for months on end. They truly thrive on neglect!
