Shampoo Ginger, or Awapuhi, adds a tropical flair wherever it is grown with the added benefit of producing a natural shampoo. The flower heads grow out of the soil and reach maturity when they turn from green to pinkish red. The striking red, pinecone-like bracts are 3-5” long and when mature, simply squeeze the cone to harvest a ginger-scented liquid that can be used as a natural shampoo! It can be grown in a large container in northern climates or in the ground in tropical areas. Shampoo Ginger is a deciduous plant that loses its leaves in winter. When it’s dormant, you’ll often see the creeping rhizomes at soil level. Keep the plant dry and above 60 degrees until the leaves re-emerge in spring.
