Fig Tree ‘Chicago Hardy’ (Ficus carica)

Fig Tree ‘Chicago Hardy’ (Ficus carica)

$24.95
SKU: R1256-4

4" Pot Size

This hardy fig tree can take subfreezing temperatures, dying back in the fall and resprouting in the spring. The medium-size fruit ripens to a delicious, sweetness in late summer and early fall. For northern growers, give Fig ‘Chicago Hardy’ a heavy mulch with hay or leaves when dormant. An excellent candidate for pot culture, this easy-to-grow fig is also known as 'Bensonhurst Purple.' Its origins are from Sicily.

Beautiful Growth First Year!

We ordered 2 and installed in oversize outdoor planters. Both grew to approx. 4' tall, one produced edible fruit mid-summer and both have a lot of unripe fruit on them now (9/21) so we probably won't have time for them to ripen. Very happy with the health and vigor of this variety. As the planters are much too heavy to move, we will be mulching thickly with pine needles and wood excelsior, then loosely wrapping with burlap to avoid wind dessication. Highly recommend for those who need a hardy variety.
