4" Pot Size

Imagine growing tropical bananas in your outdoor garden as far north as New England. With this Hardy Banana you’ll get a defining tropical look. And, yes with proper mulching, it can withstand temperatures below zero. This extremely vigorous banana grows many feet in a season and in time forms large clumps that can reach up to 13' in height. Also known as the Japanese Fiber Banana, it makes a fine container specimen. If grown inside, it will tolerate varying conditions of temperature and light with ease. Although it does produce bananas, they are inedible. Simple to grow, give it plenty of water, fertilizer and sunlight.

Plant Care

Yes, you can winter over bananas in your northern garden (Zone 4 and higher) and get a defining tropical look when spring bursts through. Our outside banana stand of Musa basjoo is almost 12’ in height.  After the first hard frost, we prune the bananas back to about a foot and mulch with hay so there is approx. 3’ of hay around all sides. The mulch helps to insulate the crown. Then, we simply wait until all the snow is gone, the nighttime temperatures warm to about 40°F and presto - we have tricked “Old Man Winter” and uncover our tropical jewels of the jungle.

Please note: The stem will be soft and gelatinous but the crown underneath the soil will sprout the new shoots.

10 years later-Mine get 15-20 feet tall

I have purchased hardy banana plants from Logees over the years. Currently, I have 2 large banana groves, that grow 15-20 feet from April - October. I live in SE Connecticut. In the Winter, we just cut them back nearly to the ground, and cover them with a thick layer of straw. Wish I could upload photos of what they look like here.

Year 2, zone 6

I love these plants for their giant, tropical look! I've yet to successfully overwinter in the ground, but, last year I dug one up, put it in a giant plastic pot, and then into the basement. Occasionally watered, but mostly ignored. In the spring, it had one green leaf left, and I put it back into the ground. It has doubled in size this year--probably about 6'! I will be trying the same method again this winter.

Perfect plant for adding a tropical touch to your landscape!

I have been working on a little wildlife pond/water catchment area because of how much water gets diverted into my yard. Since I live in a suburb I ought to make it look halfway decent so I've been looking for nice plants to shade the pond in hopes the water will remain throughout the summer without me having to refill it.
I received a beautiful musa from Logee's last year and planted it in a 15 gallon grow bag. I can't begin to describe how much this plant grew in one season. It's impressive, to say the least. I can't wait to plant it into the ground this year.
I will say that you would be doing it a favor if you plant it in an area that is somewhat protected from wind. My property is really prone to hurricane-force winds because of how the neighborhood is set up. The musa did just fine with the wind but the leaves can get a little shredded during particularly bad storms.

Musa basjoo Hardy Banana

I ordered three of the Musa basjoo Hardy Banana. All arrived in excellent shape. No yellowing or dead spots. New leaf sprouting from top of all plants. Very well packaged. I would and will use Logee's in the future. Thank you for a great product.
