Ashitaba (Angelica keiskei)
Native to Japan, Ashitaba is a biennial plant that grows 4’ tall and has large, green dissected leaves. Umbels of white, umbrella-like flowers bloom from May to July, attracting pollinators of many kinds. After it flowers and sets seeds in the second year, the plant dies. However, you can save the seeds to start over again. Traditionally, it’s known for its medicinal properties and is often used to make tea or the leaves and stalks can be cooked and eaten for its high vitamin content. Grow in full sun and give plenty of water.
