Here's a hardy, colorful plant for low-light places in the home that need special attention. The pointed leaves have a deep violet-red heart with touches of green and silver. This older rex begonia hybrid has pretty pink flowers that bloom during the winter months. Very easy to grow.

Tips for Success:

• Place in good light; some direct sunlight is needed.• Accurate watering – Bring plant to a slight wilt between Ā  waterings.• Moderate fertilizer once a month.Ā Stop fertilizer in the winter.• Keep humidity above 50% andĀ night temperatures above Ā  60-65ĀŗF.• Growth cycle slows and stops for 2-3 months in the winter. Ā  Plants can lose some leaves during this resting period. Ā  This is normal. Continue normal watering.• Use terra cotta or clay pots.• Keep an eye out for mildew to which Rexes have some Ā  susceptibility.

Treating Mildew

• Identify - Appears as a white powder on the surface of the Ā  leaves, usually at the change of seasons.• Treatment - Apply a baking soda solution -1Tbl/quart with a Ā  dribble of dishwashing detergent.• Application - Spray at first signs and reapply every other day for Ā  4-5 applications.• Prevention - Spray once every 3 months.Ā Pure Neem Oil is Ā  effective on mildew.
