Hibiscus ‘Japanese Lantern’ (Hibiscus schizopetalus)

Hibiscus ‘Japanese Lantern’ (Hibiscus schizopetalus)

$19.95
SKU: R1330-4

4" Pot Size

This Central African Hibiscus species has an upright and spreading form which highlights the deeply curved petals and dangling stamens. Often called Japanese Lantern, it's a sporadic bloomer. But when it does flower, watch out! Grow in rich, well-drained soil and provide plenty of water and fertilizer. Since flowers form on new wood, regular pruning helps to maintain a nice shape and stimulate more blooms.

Plant Care

Tips for Success:

• Sun, sun and more sun.• They are warm-growing plants and suffer if subjected to    cool temperatures over extended periods. As a rule, keep    temperatures above 65°F, especially in the winter.• Water on visual soil dryness or plant wilt. Severe wilt can hurt   them. Careful watering is critical during the winter or anytime   when the light level is low and temperatures are cool.• Under high light and warm temperatures they are   heavy feeders and need a balanced fertilizer applied   on a regular basis. A fertilizer like Dyna Gro “Grow” 7-9-5 will   help induce blooms.• Flowering varies widely between varieties. Full sun, warm   temperatures, a balanced fertilizer and careful attention to   watering will produce the best results for your hibiscus.

Insanely fast growing

This is a super-fast growing hibiscus (Hawaii). I've had to chop this bush down many times as it reaches six feet with laterally spreading, tall, willowy branches. Here in Hawaii we have an annoying hibiscus leaf mite that loves to make ugly bumps in the leaves, and this hibiscus seems susceptible to that mite, but as far as I know, no other states have this mite, so if you don't live in Hawaii, you're in luck against this mite. Mine grows in a large pot outside, but the roots have grown into the ground from the holes in the pot. As far as the flowers, they are delicate and lovely. I've garnished tropical drinks by taping the flowers onto a bamboo skewer and it looks super cute!

Beautiful Exotic Flowers on A Fast Growing Plant

I purchased this plant in June 2020. It came as a healthy little plant and really grew fast as i had it outside on my patio all summer. I live in Wisconsin so it came in this fall and spent the winter near a south facing window where it flourished! The day it bloomed i was in awe! It was just one flower to start but it was so spectacular i couldn't take my eyes off of it! Super impressed with the beauty and quality of this plant!

Beautiful blooms

I received this plant a year ago. It was tall and continually gave me blooms. I have 12 blooms on them today. And I have 6 blooms everyday. Such a beauty!
