One of the longest successive blooming orchids of all time, Psychopsis Mendenhall ‘Hildos’ received a First-Class Certificate award from the American Orchid Society. The unusual flower is mahogany and yellow and shaped like a butterfly. The flowers are 2” wide x 5” high. It tends to bloom in late winter or early spring on a 2-3’ tall flower spike. Do not cut the flower spike once the bloom has passed since the plant will rebloom on the same spike for many years. A new flower bud forms behind each flower that drops. It’s not uncommon for this plant to remain in bud or bloom for many months. Bold red striped and spotted foliage adds to its charm. Be sure to allow the potting media to dry out between waterings. The roots are very sensitive to overwatering. We ship a blooming size plant not necessarily in spike.
Special note: This rare orchid has slight scarring on the backsides of the leaves. This is a normal part of the growth process and not related to any pest or disease. The front sides of the leaves have the beautiful red spotted and striped variegation. This will not affect flowering.
