Vanilla Bean Orchid - Vanilla Vine

Vanilla Vine (Vanilla planifolia)

$39.95
SKU: A2508-4

Often called the Vanilla Bean Orchid, this all-green Vanilla Vine produces the tasty vanilla bean much coveted by bakers. It is a somewhat slow growing vine and needs a stake or trellis to climb on. Once it has matured, it will begin to flower. Each beautiful Vanilla Orchid flower only lasts one day but other flowers will open on the spike on subsequent days. The flowers need to be hand pollinated to produce vanilla beans.

Great Long Term Project

The vine came in great condition in full sphagnum moss. I repotted to a 70/30 moss/bark mix and it's thrived. It's done great as an indoor plant that spends summers outside and loves the humidity and bright indirect light. It does need a good pole to climb up but with the right conditions and some light liquid feed in growing season it shoots up. Great Vine!

Better than I expected

Have not gotten to repot yet as i received it yesterday but plants are gorgeous with perfectly healthy leaves and stems. It even came with two cuttings that have a growth tip and a third that doesn't have one yet. They came in spaghnum moss and i will grow them in that with a cork log as the trellis for a more natural look.

Beautiful plant

I ordered this vine in November 2018, it is now July 2020 and my vine is doing great! It is over 6 feet long now.

Gorgeous!

I have heard how slow these vines grow so I was shocked when mine began growing fast. The plant was pretty small when it came in about a year ago and its already grown to over 2 feet tall. It will be awhile before we ever get beans, at least a few more years, but the rate of growth is stunning. Beautiful, beautiful plant!

Grows pretty quickly for a "slow-growing" vine

Vanilla vines typically won't flower/fruit until reaching at least 10 feet long, but the vine I got from Logee's has already grown 3 feet in just 9 months! The trick to rapid growth is high humidity (similar to orchids, bat flowers, etc.) combined with daily highs in the 75-90 degree range. If you are willing to sacrifice your summer air conditioning in a brightly-lit bathroom or shower, or if you have one of those miniature plastic-covered greenhouses, vanilla vines can do surprisingly well indoors.
