Mango Tree ‘Pickering’

Mango Tree ‘Pickering’ (Mangifera indica hybrid)

$89.95
SKU: R2199-6G

6" Pot Size Grafted Plant

If you’re looking for the perfect mango to grow in a pot that will fruit at an early age, then ‘Pickering’ is the mango for you. It fruits easily in an 8” pot at just 4’ tall. ‘Pickering’ has a compact growth habit, is a strong grower and is not as susceptible to diseases like some other mango varieties we have grown. The fruit is flavorful and not as fibrous as some. Flowers appear late winter to spring and fruits follow in the summer. The trick to fruiting ‘Pickering’ is to give it a bit of a chill in the late fall or winter, which stimulates flowering. We also recommend allowing the plant to grow for a couple of years before fruiting, so it will develop a sturdy trunk and branches to hold the weight of the mangos in future years. This is a grafted plant that blooms and fruits sooner.

Cannot convince it NOT to flower (yet)! Amazingly healthy!

When it arrived this March I was a bit dubious, as it had almost no root and was just under a foot tall. But I potted it up and put it under the grow lights with my orchids (in Colorado) and it promptly bloomed. I laughed at its ambitions and cut off the flowers, and it rewarded me with a few new leaves. When the nights reached a reliable 60F, I put it outside on a South facing wall and it flowered AGAIN. Cut those off, and it flowered a third time. Cut those off, and it grew several inches and added more leaves. Nights are again dipping into the low 50s so I brought it back inside a couple weeks ago and with the increased humidity it bloomed AGAIN and formed a new branch. It's maybe 18" tall now so still far too small to support fruit, but damned if it isn't going to produce the moment I let it! I am absolutely thrilled with its success in our less than ideal climate!

Best Mango Specimen I have ever received

Once again, Logees has demonstrated it's absolutely fastidious attention to detail: the specimen received is perfect. Graft union is perfect, branching for a rounded canopy is apparent, stem is clean. The intrinsic value of this vastly exceeds the asking price. This is an opportunity for anyone lucky enough to have a few square feet of space and devotion to the King of fruits. The secret to mangoes is keeping them physically dry and ensuring that the substrate is sharp draining; they like terra cotta as well and it is ideal for them because it really airs out the roots. This is the only mango aside from the Nam Doc that you would need because it is perfect.

Great plant

The plant put on a lot of flowers this spring when only 6 months old, removed flowers much too small to leave on and a few weeks later got the trunk grew about 8 in. then a ? ( Florida Grass Hopper took off about 5 in. cleaned up the insect damage . now about 6 weeks later there are 3 shoots came up, then these developed about 3 shoots each and the entire plant is about 20 in. It looks very healthy and I will have a nice multi-trunk tree. It is in a 24 in.pot and could not look better.
