Bush Cherry Plant ‘Joel’ (Prunus japonica x Prunus jacquemontii)

Bush Cherry Plant ‘Joel’ (Prunus japonica x Prunus jacquemontii)

$24.95
SKU: P8441-4

4" Pot Size

Hybridized by renowned plant breeder Dr Elwyn Meader of Durham, NH, Bush Cherry ‘Joel’ grows 4’ tall by 3’ wide and ripens in late summer to escape spring frosts and bird damage (supposedly birds cause less fruit damage in late summer since there are other tasty things for them to eat). Similar in size and flavor to a Montmorency tart cherry, the fruits ripen in late August. The fresh cherries can be processed into jams, jelly, pies or cherry juice. Tart cherry juice or dried tart cherries contain high levels of antioxidants that are beneficial to human health. Cherry plants start bearing fruit in 2-3 years and will have a productive life of 20 years. Bush Cherry ‘Joel’ is self-fertile, plus it has good vigor and disease resistance. Pink flowers appear in spring making it highly ornamental as well as an excellent plant for edible landscaping in the home garden.

quick turn around

As other review noted, started fruiting in second year. Am in zone 7 and it blooms very early--as soon as warm weather arrives but bees aren't out yet so be ready to hand pollinate. Sets fruit in z7 fairly early and as hopeful as I was about birds leaving it alone due to other things to eat, this is not the case. Be prepared to net the tree. Will also mention, I ordered in winter and while shipping was delayed due to cold weather, seedling ended up stuck in NY state for a bit and the central leader was dead when it did arrive. I recommend delaying ordering until weather is warm in NE to avoid this issue. Otherwise, fruited early and has been tolerant of less than ideal watering.

Lively Little Plants

We ordered too late in the alaskan season to plant and am overwintering inside. They arrived looking great and dormant. Within a few weeks in the sunroom under grow light conditions these plants, which are under a foot tall, are leafing out and even have blooms.

The purchase isn't in my history because my husband ordered after I showed him my lime leaf order and this website for the first time. Logee's customer service was awesome, they combined my order with his and let us upgrade the shipping so that we could get these plants we're so excited about sooner than spring.

I have fruits

I was very surprised to have blooms in a week of delivery and 7 cherries after that. Very unusual for this size of three.
Thank you.

I have cherries!

I ordered 2 plants. And I've got them really small approx 8-9' each. For my big surprise, one of them bloomed in a week. As a result, I have 4 my first cherries during the first year. Thank you, I' so happy. I would like to send you pictures but I don't know how to do it.

Tart and Delicious

Easy grower, began fruiting after first year (in ground).
Not finicky or temperamental on waterings; slow growth during the first year and took off in the second.
