Lion’s Ears (Leonotis leonurus)

Lion’s Ears (Leonotis leonurus)

$14.95
SKU: R1406-2

2.5" Pot Size

This native of South Africa has long been used for late summer and early autumn container gardening display. Young plants started in June will reach full maturity as summer wanes and then burst forth in a blizzard of orange tufts that form along the stems. Its growth rate is astounding when given full sun and high amounts of water and feed. Although it’s the shorter day length that brings it into autumn bloom, we also see some sporadic blooms in spring. Very vigorous.

Tough! Good for Arizona miserable desert atmosphere

I am surprised it survived our almost un-surviveable 119F degree heat here. Tough! plant. Cut back severely to bring back brilliant neon-orange, almost sci-fi in it's oddity- flowers. I do not know if our US hummingbirds can access these weird flowers or not, they are very deep made for South African honeybirds.,

great plant for Arizona and the West

I have this plant. There are two Leonotis, one is Lion's Tail, one is Lion's Ears. Location Phoenix AZ temps 115F. I actually have my Leonotis partially shaded as I find even Full Sun plants get too much radiation and heat here.
