Given the 2024 Best Plant award at the International Plant Fair in Essen, Germany, Mangave ‘Praying Hands’ won the special prize as a “plant of the future” that showcases innovation in ornamental plant cultivation. Mangave is a new intergeneric cross of Manfreda x Agave. It has faster growth and interesting patterns like the Manfreda but the superior habit of the Agave. ‘Praying Hands’ gets its unique habit from one of its parents, Agave ocahui. When young, the plant is more rounded but the leaves curl upwards like a teardrop as the plant matures. Cinnamon brown terminal spines nearly touch each other and red leaf edges add to its charm. It can be grown in a container or planted in the garden in zone 9 and higher. ‘Praying Hands’ makes an ideal plant in locations with water restrictions due to its low water needs.
