Anthurium ‘Big Red Bird’ (Anthurium sect. Pachyneurium)
Long,
lance-shaped
leaves emerge
green and turn
red in bright light
or cool temperatures.
The foliage
has a slight wave
on the edges and
some crinkle in
the leaf. ‘Big Red
Bird’ is in the
Anthurium genus
in the section
called Pachyneurium. These are birds-nest anthuriums with a rosette growth
habit and the emerging leaves are rolled inward towards the central leaf vein.
In bright light, the central leaf vein is reddish, just like the leaves. Grow in
bright indirect light in the home or partial shade outside. Keep the soil lightly
moist. This is an excellent plant for indoor gardens since it’s resilient and
hard to kill. When grown outdoors in tropical locations, ‘Big Red Bird’ can
reach up to 6’ tall with 3’ long leaves. It’s truly impressive!
