Atemoya Fruit Tree ‘African Pride’ (Atemoya hybrid)
Also called Pineapple
Sugar Apple, Atemoya ‘African
Pride’ is a delicious, high-quality
tropical fruit that is a cross
between Cherimoya and Sugar
Apple. ‘African Pride’ produces
large, bumpy fruit with juicy, white
inner flesh that tastes slightly
sweet and tart with a custard-like
texture. There are large black
seeds inside the fruit. It is easier
to grow than a Cherimoya since it
flowers and fruits at a young age
much like the Sugar Apple. It is a
large grower in tropical zones yet in the north, it’s easy to grow as a container
plant and can be maintained at 5-6’ tall with pruning. It blooms in
summer with fruit ripening in mid-winter and then it has a dormant period
when the tree can be deciduous. Like many Custard Apples outside of
their native range, it needs hand pollination for good fruit set.
