This new cold-tolerant fig, ‘Hartford Hardy’ is similar to ‘Chicago Hardy’ in that it grows well in zones 5-10 and produces sweet reddish-brown figs. However, Hartford Hardy ripens 2-3 weeks earlier than ‘Chicago Hardy’ which is a real benefit for northern gardeners. It’s a better variety for northern zones, or coastal areas, where temperatures are cooler and the growing season is shorter. It was discovered in Hartford, Connecticut, growing unprotected in someone’s garden. Like most figs, you can mulch for more winter protection. Grow in full sun and harvest figs in late summer or early fall.
