Mangave is a new intergeneric cross of Manfreda x Agave. It has faster growth and interesting patterns like the Manfreda but the superior habit of the Agave. ‘Permanent Wave’ is the largest silver mangave to date. The massive leaves can exceed 6” wide at maturity and the plant usually reaches 18-20” tall and up to 3’ wide. Cinnamon-colored terminal spines contrast the silver leaves. Due to its parentage, ‘Permanent Wave’ is one of the hardiest mangaves. It can be planted in the garden in zone 7b and higher or grown in a large container in colder zones. This fast-growing succulent adds visual delight to any low maintenance, drought-tolerant garden.
Please note: the young plant you will receive is green in color (as seen in the second photo). As it matures and is exposed to brighter light, new leaves develop the silvery coating called farina. This natural, powdery layer helps protect the plant from intense sun and reduces moisture light. Leaves formed in lower light typically stay greener, but if they are still expanding when moved into brighter conditions, they may develop the silvery finish over time. Farina is delicate - it can be rubbed off by handling or washed away with overhead watering, and once removed, it will not return to that part of the leaf.
