One of the largest flowers in the world, a single bloom of Pelican Flower is a sight to behold. The heart-shaped flower face can reach up to a foot long and grow 8 inches wide. Maroon veining appears over the cream-colored flower. The deep maroon center bull’s eye leads to an inflated pouch. Adding to its mystique, a long tendril tail descends from the front of the flower. When in bloom, it emits a carrion-like odor to attract pollinators but within 24 hours, the smell dissipates and then just a gorgeous bloom is left to admire. Grow in full to partial sun with support for this vining specimen and watch how many flowers appear when it reaches maturity.

Lars Rosengreen The flowers are spectacular and a real statement. Even when the plant is not in flower, the bright green heart shaped leaves are also very pretty. The plant I got from Logee’s is very vigorous, and I spend a little time every couple of months thoughtfully trimming it back so that it doesn’t completely take over. I’m about to buy a second one, I love the plant that much.
One word of caution: the leaves and other tissues do contain aristolochic acid which has been linked to severe kidney damage and cancer, so this is probably not a good species to have around toddlers or pets, and it may be worth wearing gloves when you trim it.
