A favorite herb for use in curry, ‘Gamthi’ has a heavier growth habit and is a more compact plant than the standard Curry Leaf when grown in a container. Considered to have more aromatic leaves, it forms suckers from the base creating a dense specimen as it ages. The flowers are sweetly fragrant with blooms starting after the plant has been growing for at least a year or two. However, the leaves can be harvested at any time for cooking.

Rare and expertly grown

I love these plants. I had been looking for them for years, but experienced a lot of poor specimens and cuttings that didn't root. I bought two of these from Logee's and they arrived so healthy, symmetrical, and hardy. They are growing rapidly in just a few months! Through this experience, I always shop at Logee's first and am on several waiting lists for other rare plants. Their instructions for care are always spot on, their plants are well cared for, and their shopping is top notch.

Exceptional variety!

Bought two of these last time, trying to find the famed gamthi variety. They both survived great this time. These were very well packaged and cared for. One of the plants grew about 12" in 3 months, much faster than the regular variety I have that grow maybe 6" in 3 months. The fast one will be my future mother plant - hope she produces lots of gamthi curry seeds. I think the key was the container size (a 8" plastic pot) and the soil (nutrient rich light fluffy soil - with just the right amount of worm castings - and 2" of wet feet thanks to a deep saucer; maybe coir but my plants in coir often struggle due to lack of nutrients).

There are at least 3 cultivars, maybe more - occasionally some Indian stores carry other than the 'regular' variety (at least here in TX) - and grab those leaves when you can! There is one variety with really small leaves (even more flavorful than gamthi I feel - reminiscent of the rich monsoon soils of India), this gamthi has thicker (more shiny) leaves, and regular (delicious but not strong flavor).

Grab them when Logees has them next - their gamthi plants, grown from seed, will likely work well for you - or, you can gamble elsewhere and prepare for surprises!

Worth the Wait

My Gamthi arrived in perfect condition. I waited 3 days to repot my plant. It is beautiful and fragrant and was very well rooted. Grateful that Logee's takees such good care of their plants.

Nice Tree - Don't Let It Fool You Though!

I purchased one of these Gamthi curry trees in fall of 2019. It was beautiful green and healthy. In late December, the leaves started yellowing and falling off. The tip of the tree had two little curly buds that looked like leaves ready to unfurl, but they never did anything. I watched it for months! I kept checking the trunk, if the trunk shriveled and dried I was going to trash this little tree.

Well, now it is April, and I am happily surprised to see this tree waking up from its winter slumber. Yes, it took me a long time to find my way to the instructions that spoke of how this variety is more sensitive to cool temperatures and may go dormant. I'm glad I did not compost it, I can't wait for it to leaf out and grow! I do recommend giving this one a try. The leaves are very fragrant.
