Indonesian Wax Ginger (Tapenochilus ananassae)

The stunning flowers of Indonesian Wax Ginger last for months and bring cones of deep red color to the base of this tall and vigorous grower. Although known to be a continuous bloomer in its native habitat, when grown inside in a container it can bloom from early summer into early winter. The flowers are made up of bracts that resemble a pinecone or pineapple and feel like a heavy plastic-like substance. They rise from the soil on stems 6 to 12” with mature plants in containers having many flowers at one time. As an understory plant in a tropical forest, they prefer partial sunlight but will grow well even in dappled shade.
